Overview
The name "Amboseli" comes from a Maasai word meaning "salty dust",
located in the Southern part of the country bordering Tanzania crowned by Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, the Amboseli National Parks is perhaps one of Kenya's most well known parks, often called the ‘Land of Giants’ due to the impressive elephants here carrying massive tusks.
Established in 1974 as a national park. It has a great history as one of the oldest protected areas in Kenya in 1991 that the park was declared UNESCO world heritage site so as to protect, preserve and conserve the different unique species at the park.
Amboseli is known as the best spot in Africa for getting up near free-ranging elephants. The population is so robust here that sightings are guaranteed!
The park is endorsed by a wide range of tourist attractions and this has made the recreation area quite possibly one of the most famous national parks in Kenya as well as all of Africa.
Wildlife
Amboseli National Park is quite possibly Kenya's most famous park. The animals are set against stunning vistas of Mt Kilimanjaro, which makes a magnificent backdrop to the park. Aside from elephants, many plain animals are easy to spot.
The park offers a great wildlife viewing experience, and four of the Big Five are present. Rhinos are absent, but big herds of elephants reliably move to and from the marshy swamps in the center of the park. Buffalo, wildebeest, Burchell's zebra and gazelle are all very common. Lions are the easiest to spot of the big cats. Smaller mammals like hyena, foxes, jackals, vervet monkey and the yellow baboon abound
The sky and skyline are huge here incorporating Amboseli's 5 wildlife environments which ensure great numbers and diversity: wetlands, savannah, forests, thistle shrubbery and the dry lakebed of Lake Amboseli.
Birdlife
With north of 420 bird species. Birding is one of the best activities that is done in the Amboseli rainy season. Birding is done from March to May and also around November. The park also receives more migratory birds across the world. Birds spotted include Hartlaub’s bustard, Pelicans, von der decken’s hornbill, Flamingo, Crowned cranes, Egrets, Herons, pangani longclaw, steel-blue whydah Secretary birds, Love birds, Starlings, Ostriches, White-bellied go away bird and many more.
